Whether you’re creating Facebook Live, YouTube or some other type of video, captions are a really important part of the process. Captions are the words that display when a video is playing and the best caption creator I’ve found is Rev.com.
So why do you want to have captions on your video?
Well, according to DigiDay, 85% of people watch a video with the sound off on Facebook. Eighty-five percent is huge!
I know I watch videos all the time with sound off, so it makes a lot of sense to me.
That means to get your video content consumed, you have to meet your audience where they are. That’s where captions come in.
Captions can be really time-consuming to create. And if you hire someone to do it, it can be costly. I know I used to hire a person to do that.
Then I found Rev.com in January 2017.
I don’t remember how I found them, but I’m sure grateful that I did. It’s reduced my costs considerably.
But the service not only saved me money, they’ve also saved me a ton of time.
What’s really cool about them is I can order more than one file type at a time. Which saves me even more money!
Ordering Captions or Transcription
It’s super easy to make a video on Facebook, YouTube or on your own computer and then let Rev.com do the heavy lifting for you. Here’s a walkthrough of the steps (and an example below of how easy it is to do).
- Step 1: Do your Facebook Live, then head on over to Rev.com.
- Step 2: Enter your order for a transcript, and captions (both Facebook and other platforms).
- Step 3: Check out. The cost is the same whether you order just the Facebook captions or if you add on other captions and a transcript file. For example, if the video is 15 minutes it only costs $15 even though you’re getting captions (two types) and a transcript. How neat is that?
- Step 4: You get an email acknowledging your order.
- Step 5: Within 24 hours, you get all of your requested files delivered straight to your email inbox. (I rarely have to wait 24 hours. I’ve even received my files in as fast as 20 minutes!)
What’s really cool is they guarantee 99% accuracy. That’s a pretty good guarantee. And I’ve rarely ever found the tiniest discrepancy.
Is It Too Expensive?
Some people say that Rev.com is too expensive. They say that they can get Facebook or YouTube to do automatic captions for free or they can get them done using the automatic tool Temi (.10/minute).
To that I say hogwash! I’ve used them all and the accuracy doesn’t even come close to Rev.com.
So let’s see how “free or cheap” it is to use an automated caption creation service.
- Step 1: Do a Facebook Live and request automatic captions.
- Step 2: Wait for captions to finish.
- Step 3: Review your captions to see where corrections are needed.
- Step 4: Spend your precious, sparse, expensive time fixing that “free or cheap” captions file.
And after you’ve spent that time, you still have to take the time to create a transcript file! Ugh!
Plus, if you’re wasting your time fixing captions and transcripts, you’re not doing something else that’s important in your business.
Do You Really Need Captions and Transcription?
If you have a blog or use social media you sure do.
It’s called repurposing your content. You can take the transcript of your video and turn it into a blog post, a free give away, and several social media posts.
There’s no reason to just have your content in one place and a video transcript is a great starting point for getting your message out.
You Can Use It For Podcast Transcripts Too!
I’ve spent a good bit of time talking about video here, but I want to make sure you know that Rev.com will transcribe audio too.
They’re a great resource for transcribing your podcast audios that you can turn into a pretty downloadable transcript file for your audience (and you can repurpose the content too).
Here’s a Step-By-Step Walkthrough on Using Rev.com for Captions and Transcripts
Just follow the steps below to get started and in no time you’ll have captions and transcripts for your videos!
Step 1: When you land on the site, you’ll be greeted by this page. I normally click on Caption to get started. You’ll be able to add the transcription in a later step.
Step 2: Click on Get Started to begin the process.
Step 3: Next you’ll tell Rev.com where your video file is located. They’ve made it super simple for you. You can upload from your computer, have them pulled directly from your YouTube or Vimeo account, or simply give them a link to a public web address (like the link to your Facebook Live video). Just click on whatever option you’d like to use.
Step 4: For this example, I chose to upload a video file from my computer. Once I clicked on that option, I was taken to the upload screen so I could select my video file.
Step 4a: Select your video file and press open.
Step 4b: Once your file has uploaded, you can choose to upload more files or just X out of this screen (top right corner). Rev.com will list every successfully uploaded video on the screen to show your progress.
Step 5: You’ll notice I uploaded two files (one is 14 minutes, and the other is one minute). I’m ready to make my final order selections and then begin the checkout process. If you need help here, Support information is listed right on the screen (I love that!) so you don’t have to go digging around if you get stuck.
Step 6: This is where you can identify additional file formats you want to order. You’ll notice that Subrip (srt) is already checked — that’s the file format for captions. What I do on this screen is also check Transcript and Facebook Ready Subrip (for Facebook Live files). It won’t change the price at all! When you’re done with your selections, press Checkout.
Step 7: You can pay for your order via credit card or PayPal. I have an account because I use them so often so my details are saved. Just select your payment choice and press Place Order.
Step 8: Once your order has been submitted successfully, Rev.com will display this screen in case you want to add any additional information to help them with the content. What you’d want to add here are speaker names and any specific terms that you want to make sure don’t get misunderstood in the process. If you don’t have anything to add, just press close to exit that screen.
Step 9: This is a final display of your order including your Order Number.
Step 10: Boom! By the time you log out of Rev.com and head over to your email box, you’ll have an email from them detailing your order.
Step 11: As soon as your order is done, you’ll get an email in your mailbox telling you the files are ready. It comes in zip file format. You’ll just download it and unzip the file to add the captions to your video and use your transcript to write your blog post, freebie or social media posts. Note that this order only took 19 minutes to complete! Most do take longer than that, but they’re still super quick.
And That’s All There Is To It
Can you see why I love Rev.com so much? They’re super easy to do business with, and save me a ton of time and money too. Plus their support is amazing and you don’t have to go digging around the site to find out how to contact them. It’s front and center on every screen you reach. That’s the way every online business should work, don’t you think?
